Increase Hours of Library Access

Increase library hours during the fall and spring semesters to include full access 24 hours per day beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday of the final week of instruction through 9 p.m. on the last day of final exams. This would allow 110 additional hours of access for students each semester.

Problem: Students need access to the Library to study and conduct research. Access is not adequate during final exams. ASI currently keeps the Titan Student Union open 24 hours during finals. The University should expand the library hours to mirror ASI offerings during finals to allow students additional space to study and to support academic success. Proposed Solution: Increase library hours during the fall and spring semesters to include full access 24 hours per day beginning at 745am on Monday of the final week of instruction through 9pm on the last day of final exams. This would allow 110 additional hours of access for students each semester. Cost to Address Problem: Cost to offer full access to the library is $840 per hour. $840 X 110 hours equals $185,000 per year. For Year 3, the Pollak library fall/spring semester hours will be M-Th 6:30 am-midnight, F 7am-9pm, SaSu 10am-midnight; the Irvine campus library fall/spring semester hours will be staffed M-Th 7am-8pm, F 7am-4pm, Sa 7am-4:30pm. The Pollak library will maintain the two-week, 24/7 period the weeks before and during finals. The Irvine campus library will maintain its expanded hours during the weeks before and during finals. Around final exam time, we will again coordinate all 24/7 and expanded hour opportunities for students during finals.

No changes since last report.

Last report: The Pollak library previously added 6.5 additional hours per week and the Irvine campus library has added 3.5 additional staffed hours per week, both for 33 weeks. We are also looking into additional security and further expanding library hours during the semester and summer.

Two CSS officers for the Library 24/7 period, which will allow us to check ID's and improve security during 24/7; and  our  CSS officer to help with security and facilities issues during the late afternoon and evening year round.
